These films reflect up to 90% of sunlight, even infrared rays and ultraviolet rays too. This material also acts as good insulation against electricity in cold and hot conditions. Mylar has high tensile strength, reflective properties, stiffness, and have very clarity in material. Its thickness varies from 12 um to 350 um.Based on several combinations of finishes, types and thickness these have different varieties. More and more new things are being developed & this material is replacing many of other materials. So these are replacing very high weighted materials such as metals. These sheets are rolled in various directions. Because of its advantages its application are increasing.
The films are Environmental friendly polymers. 5 types of sheets are available and 4 types of finishes are available. To change its smoothness and to increase its roughness any desired material can be added. Polyester is one such replacement for coatings & these are film coatings used to increase the life of any fragile material or to beautify different presentable objects. These films can adhere even in extreme environments. These are light weight polymers. There are many colors, sizes which are available in Mylar films. Various types of inorganic materials and chemicals can be added.
These films dont get contaminated by gases or water. This is environmental friendly because it is safe, non toxic, dont have plasticizers, and dont contain heavy metals. Various finishes of Mylar film are black, white, haze and clear. These are made using liquid Polythene Terephthalate & are crystallized using heated rollers. This is also the one of the main reason that they are used up to a large extent. Other properties of Mylar are low coefficient of friction, high wear and tear power, high stability, and low to high shrinkage in any cotton sewing thread direction. So used by scientists in experiment purposes too. Different types of Mylar films are Plain, Anti-static, Adhesion treated, Moralized and Barrier coated. You just cannot ignore the importance of plastic in daily life.
